The Knitistry is a series of programs designed to bring companionship, support and healing to those in need. The goal of these programs is to promote overall wellness and to cultivate communities of care, connection, and creativity at the same time. The communities included in this initiative are the elderly, troubled youth, the homeless and those struggling with life threatening illnesses.
As an ordained Interfaith Minister, being of service to others is a top priority. I use knitting as a catalyst for joy, connection, and supportive conversation. This type of exchange can have an extremely powerful effect on one’s overall mental health, and offer an alternative healing method that works hand-in-hand with modern medicine.
There are many proven health benefits of knitting. Research has shown that knitting lowers blood pressure and stress, reduces anxiety and depression, combats loneliness, creates a sense of usefulness and purpose, provides healing from chronic pain, and assists in the recovery of addiction issues…just to name a few.
Some of The Knitistry programs currently in development include: knitting support groups for cancer patients and their loved ones, knitting classes for youth and the elderly, yarn donation drives, and knit-a-longs that create donation items for hospitals, cancer centers, and homeless shelters.
